Spotting At Heathrow
Unfortunately one of the offical locations for spotting at Heathrow was shut down due to security resaon. But still one exsists - The Vistitors Centre on North Perimeter Road (see below for more information), but there are plans to build an aircraft viewing platform in front of the Visitors centre later this year.
Heathrow Vistors Centre/Academy
Located on North Perimeter Road, many spotters choose to spot from here. This location is good for spotting but no good for photography, because of the perimeter fence! From here runway 09L/27R has very close views and also from here views of aircraft parked in Terminal 1 Stands and part of Terminal 3 stands can be seen. Also from here the maintenance area has clear views, here park up South African (747's and A340's) and Qantas (747's). Also some executive and government aircraft can be seen. When the weather is right views of 09R/27L can be seen although you will need a good pair of Binoculars or an SBS-1 system, the weather has to be perfect! Sometimes it is to hazy or sometimes too cloudy. Also at the visitors centre there is an cafe (which is only open on weekdays) and an entusiasts shop selling models, books, magazines, etc this is open 7 days a week and can be found at the left hand side of the building. There is a McDonald's over the road. This location is only called the visitors centre, but really you are spotting in the car park it cost £1.00 per hour, so be aware of the weather
Location -
The Vistors Centre is on Newall Road, which is off Bath Road, For anyone with Sat Nav the postcode is UB3 5AP.
Myrtle Avenue
The grass area close to Myrtle Avenue at Heathrow has become a very popular spot since the closure of the Queens Building. The spot is perfectly placed on the approach to runway 27L and when this is the landing runway, brilliant photos can be taken. It is almost guaranteed that you WILL NOT be stopped by the authorites!
HOW TO GET THERE - Follow the perimeter road from the M4 end, heading for Terminal 4. You will go past the aircraft crossing and through the BA maintanence area and eventually come out at Hatton Cross Tune Station. From here turn left at the mini roundabout, don't turn right towards T4. You will come to a set of traffic lights with a dual carriageway passing left to right. Go straight ahead over the lights and turn first right into the residential area. You can park your car somewhere down the main road if possible, PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE WAY OF RESIDENTS DRIVEWAYS! Mrtyle Avenue is on the right of the main road with the grass field at the bottom of the street.
Renaissance Hotel
The hotel now offers weekend breaks for plane spotters. This guarantees you a room with a fantastic runway view, and loads of other extras. Rooms start from £93 per night, although you are getting alot for your money. The link below gives more information and how to book.
